The government of Perak systemically oppresses food-producing communities—the lifeblood of food security for Malaysians. Lawan Lapar’s legal trainings aim to equip farmers with the knowledge and capacity to resist government oppression and to make a living for all Malaysians.
TOWNHALL WITH FARMERS
IN CHEMOR, PERAK
8 July 2023
Around 70-80 smallholder farmers from Chemor and the surrounding areas in central Perak attended our townhall, many of them under threat of eviction by the state government as their farming land were under temporary occupation licences (TOL) from the state government. Many came to Lawan Lapar to seek help and support, and Lawan Lapar took the initiative to collect certain information from each attendee regarding the status of their farming land in order to create an advocacy strategy involving all the farmers.
TOWNHALL & BRIEFING SESSION WITH FISHERMEN
IN PULAU PANGKOR, PERAK
17 June 2023
Around 50 local fishermen and community-members who would have been affected by planned land reclamation on the eastern side of Pangkor Island attended Lawan Lapar’s townhall and briefing session, where we informed attendees on the impacts of the proposed project on their livelihoods, including ecological destruction and a loss of livelihoods from fishing and tourism. For many attendees, this was the first time they had learnt of the project’s full extent.
Lawan Lapar managed to collaborate with local community leaders in order to lodge a formal protest against the project as provided for under the Town and Country Planning Act and Local Government Act.
DOWNLOAD OUR HANDBOOK
We provided a copy of our Lawan Lapar handbook to every attendee at our townhall events as part of our strategy of empowering food producing communities and informing them of their rights.
