Lawan Lapar

The government of Perak systemically oppresses food-producing communities—the lifeblood of food security for Malaysians. Lawan Lapar’s legal trainings aim to equip farmers with the knowledge and capacity to resist government oppression and to make a living for all Malaysians.

TOWNHALL & BRIEFING SESSION WITH FISHERMEN
IN PULAU PANGKOR, PERAK

17 June 2023

Around 50 local fishermen and community-members who would have been affected by planned land reclamation on the eastern side of Pangkor Island attended Lawan Lapar’s townhall and briefing session, where we informed attendees on the impacts of the proposed project on their livelihoods, including ecological destruction and a loss of livelihoods from fishing and tourism. For many attendees, this was the first time they had learnt of the project’s full extent.

Lawan Lapar managed to collaborate with local community leaders in order to lodge a formal protest against the project as provided for under the Town and Country Planning Act and Local Government Act.

Around 40 local fishermen and community-members directly affected by development on Pangkor Island attended a legal clinic organised by Lawan Lapar where fishermen and community members were encouraged and invited to ask questions and seek legal advice on the various issues they faced regarding the state government’s planned reclamation project on Pulau Pangkor

Lawan Lapar engaged lawyer Kee Hui Yee who’s background includes strategic litigation and land law cases in order for the local community to better understand the relevant laws being used by the state government as well as to plan further actions in order to preserve their land, their rights, and their way of life.
